ZED ZONE Enemies: Infected and Mechs

A ZED ZONE enemies guide: every infected type, the mechs and war machines, the Giant Mutant Lizard, and the tactics that actually work against each.

Last Updated: 2026-11-08

ZED ZONE's bestiary is split into three families: infected, machines, and the island's mutated wildlife. Each family punishes a different mistake. Infected punish noise and open ground; machines punish wooden walls and low-penetration ammo; the wildlife punishes greed.

This page covers what each enemy does and how to fight it. The boss guide→ covers the named guardians and the final boss.

Noise pulls the room

A Juggernaut is manageable in the open and lethal in a corridor. Fire once, move, and let the crowd bunch up before you commit to a fight.

Common infected

The baseline. Slow, numerous, and dangerous in a group. They hear noise, they path through doors, and they climb stairs. A single common infected is not a threat; a block of thirty is.

Tactics: fight in a doorway, use a melee weapon, and do not let them surround you. A suppressed weapon keeps the block asleep. A car alarm or a gunshot wakes it.

Special infected

Enemy Tell Threat Counter
Heavily infected Bulkier, more health Soaks damage Headshots, fire
Spitter Gurgles, arcs acid Ranged area denial Kill first, break line of sight
Botanic infected Plant growths Spores, poison Fire, stay upwind
Blaster Swollen, unstable Explodes Kill at range, do not melee
Crawler Low profile, fast Legs, ankles Back away, shoot down
Splitter Divides when killed Multiplies Fire or explosives
T-variant Tall, armoured High damage Armour-piercing ammo
Breaker Charge wind-up Destroys walls and doors Sidestep, shotgun, mines
Boomer Bloated, bile Area denial Kill before it reaches the wall
Screamer High-pitched call Summons a horde Silence it fast
Juggernaut Massive, crowd-bound Tank Explosives, fire, sustained rifle
Fan Blade Industrial mutation Fast melee Backpedal, shotgun
Army zombie Military gear Armoured Headshots, AP ammo
Flamethrower zombie Fuel tank Fire area Kill the tank, keep distance
Firefighter zombie Heavy coat Fire-resistant Melee and blunt damage

The Breaker is the enemy that ends bases. It charges in a straight line and breaks walls, doors, and fences. Sidestep the charge, then shoot it in the back. A mine on the approach is cheaper than a new wall.

The Screamer is the enemy that ends runs. If you hear the call, kill it before it finishes. A summoned horde is harder than the one you were already fighting.

Mechs

The mechs are the game's armoured faction. They appear in military areas and in the Far Island facilities:

  • Spider Robot — four-legged, fast, ranged. Flanks and climbs. Counter with cover and AP ammo.
  • War Machine — heavy, slow, high damage. Counter with explosives, railgun, or a GM6 Lynx.
  • Combat Mech — the general military mech. Counter with sustained fire and cover.
  • Spider Robot variants — some carry repair or support tools; kill them first.

Mechs are immune to the Supreme Intelligence sonic stun, and they resist small-arms fire. A 5.56 rifle will kill a Spider Robot with enough hits, but a .50 BMG or a railgun is faster. Do not fight a War Machine in the open; use a doorway and break line of sight.

The Giant Mutant Lizard

The Giant Mutant Lizard is a world boss encountered at night. It sleeps in its nest during the day and hunts after dark. It is not part of the Area Guardian chain, but it drops valuable materials.

Tactics:

  • Bait — a Giant Lizard Bait can lure another lizard, which is useful for a distraction.
  • Armour — its scales make a Scalehide set with regeneration.
  • Reward — the Lizard Serum gives a permanent +1 attribute point.
  • Timing — fight it at night near its nest, not in the open.

The lizard is fast and hits hard. Bring a rifle, a fallback path, and a repair kit. Do not try to melee it unless you have a death wish and a very good katana.

Dormant hordes

The 0.9.99.9.7 update added dormant hordes: piles of infected lying in hospitals and on the roadside. They look like corpses until noise or an attack wakes them. The PDA marks them once active.

Tactics: do not walk through a pile. If you must cross, use a quiet weapon and avoid the centre. A single grenade can clear a pile, but the noise pulls everything nearby.

Animals

Deer, bears, crows, rats, and other animals fill the ecosystem. Deer give meat and hide; bears are dangerous; crows and rats are ambience and small loot. The 1.0 build's giant lizard is the apex predator.

Hunting is quiet with a bow, loud with a rifle. A deer carcass attracts infected; butcher it away from your base.

Enemy AI rules

A few behaviours explain most fights:

  • Noise pulls. Gunshots, alarms, and explosions have a radius. Suppressors reduce it; they do not eliminate it.
  • Doors are paths. Infected open doors, break windows, and climb stairs. A closed door buys time, not safety.
  • Line of sight matters. A mech will shoot what it can see. Break sight and it repositions.
  • Fire spreads fear. Burning enemies can panic and run, which is useful in a crowd and dangerous near your base.
  • Armour is directional. Headshots and AP ammo are worth more than raw damage against armoured targets.

What to carry

A general enemy kit:

  • Rifle — 5.56 or 7.62, with AP ammo for mechs.
  • Shotgun — Breaker and close-range emergencies.
  • Melee — quiet clearing and ammo conservation.
  • Explosives — Juggernaut crowds and dormant hordes.
  • Medical — bandages and a first aid kit.

FAQ

What is the most dangerous enemy?

The Breaker for bases, the Screamer for runs, and the War Machine for open fights. The final boss is the hardest single fight.

How do I kill a mech?

Use AP ammo, a railgun, a GM6 Lynx, or explosives. Break line of sight and fight from cover.

Are dormant hordes real?

Yes. Piles of infected can wake when you make noise or attack them. The PDA marks them once active.

Can I tame the Giant Lizard?

No. It is a boss encounter, not a pet. Dogs are the tameable companion.
