ZED ZONE Vehicles: Repair and Fuel

ZED ZONE vehicles in 1.0: cars, bicycles, karts, the forklift, repair priorities, fuel, storage, and the boat that unlocks Far Island.

Last Updated: 2026-11-08

A working vehicle changes ZED ZONE more than a better gun. It turns a two-hour loot run into a twenty-minute loop, it carries building materials, and it gives you a way out when a horde wakes up. The 1.0 build also added bicycles, karts, an electric forklift, and a self-driving test car, so "vehicle" no longer means "car with an empty tank."

This guide covers the vehicle types, the repair priorities, fuel, and the boat.

Fuel is the range stat

A repaired truck with an empty tank is a shed. Carry a fuel container and note the distance to the next pump before you commit to a long drive.

Vehicle types

Vehicle Fuel Strength Weakness
Car / truck Gasoline Storage, protection, speed Loud, needs repairs, fuel
Bicycle None Quiet, cheap, carry basket Slow, exposed
Kart Gasoline Fast, fun, small Fragile, little storage
Two-seat kart Gasoline Carries a passenger Still fragile
Electric forklift Battery Lifts crates and corpses Slow, short range
Self-driving test car Gasoline / electric Follows a map destination Prototype handling
Boat Fuel Reaches Far Island One route, exposed

The bicycle is the best early vehicle. It is quiet, it needs no fuel, and the basket carries a backpack's worth of loot. The car is the best mid-game vehicle because of storage and protection. The forklift is a base tool, not a patrol vehicle.

Finding a vehicle

Cars spawn in three states:

  • Wrecked — lootable and dismantleable. The alarm can pull infected; check before you pry.
  • Fixable — missing parts but repairable. Found in car parks, garages, and repair shops.
  • Working — rare, usually with a catch: no fuel, a dead battery, or a damaged frame.

Check the interaction prompt. A fixable car shows the missing parts; a wrecked car shows salvage options. Do not spend a repair kit on a wreck.

Repair priorities

A car has several systems. Fix them in this order:

  1. Fuel tank — without fuel, nothing else matters.
  2. Battery — the engine will not start without one.
  3. Engine — determines whether the car runs and how fast.
  4. Frame — structural health; a bent frame limits speed and handling.
  5. Tires — handling and off-road ability.
  6. Lights — night driving.

A vehicle repair kit has limited charges. An item repair kit can recharge it. Carry both; a kit with no charges is a wasted slot.

Parts can be swapped between cars: batteries, tires, and lights are removable. A junkyard with three wrecks is a parts store. The crafting guide→ covers the repair kit chain.

Fuel

Fuel comes from gas stations, wrecked cars, and fuel containers. A small fuel container is a one-hand item; a big one is a two-hand haul. Siphon from every wreck you pass, even if you do not need it yet.

Fuel is the bottleneck on long trips. Plan a route with a gas station or a base stash at the midpoint. Do not drive to Far Island with a quarter tank; the boat is a separate fuel system, and the island's stations are not guaranteed.

Driving

Driving is loud. A car engine pulls infected from a wide radius, and a collision is louder. The practical rules:

  • Do not drive into a town you have not scouted. Park outside and walk in.
  • Keep the engine off when you loot. A running engine is a beacon.
  • Use the handbrake for tight turns. The 1.0 build added handbrake drifting; it is faster than braking.
  • Do not run over a Breaker. It will damage the frame and survive.
  • Watch the fuel gauge. A car that dies in a horde is a coffin.

The self-driving test car can follow a map waypoint. It is useful for long road trips, but it is a prototype: do not trust it in a fight or on a narrow bridge.

Storage

A car's storage is a mobile base chest. Use it for:

  • Building materials for a forward base.
  • Ammo and repair kits.
  • A spare melee weapon and armour.
  • Food and water for the trip.

Do not store quest items in a car you might lose. Access devices and boss keys belong in a base chest or your backpack.

The boat

The boat is the gate to Far Island. Repair it on the main island, then sail east. The cabin storage travels with you, so load it before you leave. You can return to the main island at any time, which makes Far Island an expansion rather than a one-way trip.

The boat is not a combat vehicle. It has no weapons and limited protection; do not try to ram a patrol boat or a sea creature.

Vehicle maintenance routine

Before a long trip:

  1. Check fuel.
  2. Check battery charge.
  3. Check engine and frame condition.
  4. Check tires.
  5. Load repair kits.
  6. Mark the destination on the PDA.

After a trip:

  1. Refuel.
  2. Repair damage.
  3. Unload loot into base storage.
  4. Park inside the wall or behind a gate.

A car parked outside the wall is a gift to the next horde.

Co-op vehicles

The host's world owns the vehicles. Guests can drive, but the car stays in the host's save. If a guest takes the only car and dies across the map, the host has to recover it.

Assign a driver. The 1.0 build supports passengers in some vehicles; a two-seat kart is a fast way to move two players, but it is fragile.

FAQ

What is the best vehicle?

The bicycle for the first week, a car or truck for the mid-game, and the boat for Far Island. The forklift is a base tool.

Do vehicles need fuel?

Cars, karts, the boat, and the self-driving car need fuel or a battery. Bicycles do not.

Can I repair a wrecked car?

No. Wrecks are for salvage. Fixable cars show the missing parts.

Where do I find a battery?

In other cars, garages, and military loot. A dead battery can be swapped from a wreck.
