ZED ZONE Radiation: Storms and Masks

ZED ZONE radiation: how the nuclear plant storm works, which masks and armour reduce exposure, when tablets help, and when to trigger backup cooling.

Last Updated: 2026-11-08

Radiation is the 1.0 update's environmental hazard. It is not a status effect you cure with a bandage; it is a timer on every trip into the nuclear plant. The storm surrounds the plant, the meter fills while you are inside, and the only reliable strategy is preparation and a short route.

This guide covers the protection tiers, the consumables, the backup cooling system, and the symptoms that tell you to leave.

Mask first, tablets second

A gas mask cuts the tick rate; iodine tablets extend the window. Start the backup cooling before you loot the reactor floor, not after.

Where the storm is

The radiation storm is centred on the nuclear plant on Far Island. It is not the whole island. The port, the lab, the mall, and the factory are safe without a mask; the plant and its immediate surroundings are not.

The PDA marks irradiated areas in orange. If you see an orange zone on the map, treat it as a timed area even if the meter is not visible yet.

Protection tiers

Protection Effect Cost
Gas mask Partial radiation reduction Common loot, one-time
Radiation Cloak Better reduction Crafted or rare loot
Heavy Radiation Armor Best reduction Heavy, late-game
Iodine Tablets Extends safe time Consumable
Anti-Radiation Medicine Extends safe time Consumable
Backup cooling Weakens the storm Facility action

The gas mask is the minimum. It is also a general-purpose mask for toxic areas, so carry one even before Far Island. The cloak and heavy armour trade weight and mobility for time; the heavy armour is for a dedicated plant run, not a general patrol.

Tablets and medicine do not replace protection. They extend the window. Take one before you enter, not after the meter is half full.

The meter and symptoms

Radiation sickness builds with exposure. Early symptoms are stat penalties; later stages drain health and can kill. The exact thresholds can change between patches, but the behaviour is consistent: the longer you stay, the worse it gets.

Leave when:

  • The meter is climbing faster than your route allows.
  • Your stamina or health starts dropping without a fight.
  • The PDA warning changes from a caution to a critical state.

Do not try to finish a room on a full meter. The loot is not worth the death.

Backup cooling

The nuclear plant has a backup cooling system. Activating it weakens the storm, which extends your safe time and makes the plant's deeper areas reachable. It is a facility action, not a consumable; you need to reach the control point, and the route is guarded.

Turn on the cooling before you loot the reactor area. The detour is worth it. If you trigger it after you are already sick, you have wasted the trip.

Stronger mutants

The storm area spawns stronger mutants. They are not just reskinned commons; they have more health and hit harder. Fight them with the same rules as any special: cover, AP ammo, and an exit.

Do not use fire in a confined reactor room unless you want to fight a burning crowd in a dead end. The enemies guide→ covers the mutant types.

A plant run

  1. Prepare at base. Gas mask, cloak or heavy armour, tablets, anti-radiation medicine, ammo, repair kit, food, water.
  2. Travel to the plant. Use the train or a vehicle; do not walk through the storm to save fuel.
  3. Find the cooling control. Activate backup cooling first.
  4. Loot the outer rooms. Stay on the shortest route; do not explore every office.
  5. Hit the reactor area. This is the high-value loot and the highest exposure.
  6. Leave before the meter is full. Retreat to the train or the boat.
  7. Treat at base. Use medicine, rest, and check for lingering effects.

A plant run should be a single objective, not a full clear. The plant is a timed dungeon; the respawn is outside the storm.

Radiation and food

Irradiated food and water are a separate risk. Do not drink from a source inside the storm. Carry clean water; the food guide→ covers water treatment.

Some cooked meals give health and warmth, which helps after a run. Soup is the best post-exposure meal; it does not cure radiation, but it stabilises you while medicine works.

Radiation and co-op

The host's world owns the storm state. If the host activates backup cooling, it stays active for the session. Guests should bring their own masks and tablets; do not assume the host has spare protection.

A downed player inside the storm is a hard revive. The meter keeps filling while you carry them. Decide before the run whether the group will risk it.

Common mistakes

  • Entering without a mask. The gas mask is cheap; a death is not.
  • Skipping backup cooling. The storm stays strong and the route gets shorter.
  • Looting every room. The plant is a timed dungeon.
  • Using tablets as a substitute for armour. They extend, not replace.
  • Fighting in a dead end. The mutants are stronger; you need an exit.
  • Drinking storm water. It is contaminated.

FAQ

Where is the radiation in ZED ZONE?

Around the nuclear plant on Far Island. The rest of the island is safe.

What is the best radiation protection?

Heavy Radiation Armor, plus a gas mask, plus tablets. The cloak is the middle tier.

Does backup cooling stop the storm?

It weakens it, which extends safe time. It does not remove the hazard.

Can I cure radiation sickness?

Iodine Tablets and Anti-Radiation Medicine extend safe time and help with exposure. Leave the storm and rest; do not push deeper.
