ZED ZONE Farming: Crops and Plots
ZED ZONE farming in 1.0: planting pots, twelve crops, watering and fertilizer, mushroom caves, and the recipes that make a farm worth the space.
Farming arrived with the 1.0 update, and it changed the food economy. Before 1.0, you scavenged or hunted; now you can grow a stable calorie supply inside your base walls. The system is simple enough to start on day two, but the details — water, light, mushrooms, and fertilizer — decide whether a plot feeds you or just takes up floor space.

Crops keep growing while you loot, and rain waters them for free. Start a plot early, even if you only have four seeds.
Planting pots and plots
The planting pot is the basic unit. Build it at the workbench or the build menu, place it indoors or on a roof, and interact to open the seed menu. A pot holds one crop at a time.
A plot is a group of pots. There is no separate "farm plot" block in the current build; you make a farm by placing several pots together. A 3×3 grid of pots is enough for a solo player. A co-op group of four should build two grids or a larger roof farm.
Pots need:
- Seeds — from loot, trading, or harvesting a mature crop.
- Water — a watering can, a bottle, or rain.
- Light — outdoors or under a grow light; a dark indoor room will not grow most crops.
- Time — crops grow in stages; do not harvest early.
The crops
The 1.0 build has twelve crops. The confirmed staples are:
| Crop | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Corn | Food, recipes | Reliable staple |
| Potato | Food, fries | High calorie |
| Tomato | Food, ketchup | Recipes and sauce |
| Wheat | Bread | Milling and baking |
| Mushroom | Soup, ingredients | Grows underground |
| Blueberry | Food, recipes | Bush crop |
| Pepper | Cooking | Spice and recipes |
| Lavender | Utility | Herbal use |
| Sunflower | Oil, seeds | Farm variety |
The seed menu also lists other varieties. If a seed packet exists in your inventory, the planting menu will show it; the eight above are the ones you will see most often.
Mushrooms are the exception to the light rule. They grow in dark, damp spaces, which makes a basement or a cave the best mushroom room. Do not put mushrooms on a sunny roof and expect a crop.
Planting and watering
- Place the pot on a floor block with space above it.
- Interact with the pot and choose a seed.
- Water the pot until the soil is dark. A watering can holds more than a bottle.
- Wait. The crop advances through growth stages; the pot shows the stage when you look at it.
- Harvest when mature. Harvesting returns the crop and sometimes seeds.
Rain waters outdoor pots automatically. Indoor pots need manual watering or a irrigation setup; the current build does not have sprinklers, so a watering can and a rain barrel are the practical tools.
Fertilizer speeds growth. It comes from compost, animal waste, or loot. Use it on the crops you need most, not on decorative plants.
The food chain
A farm is only useful if you cook the output. The 1.0 recipes include:
- Bread — wheat.
- Fries — potatoes.
- Ketchup — tomatoes.
- Chicken mushroom soup — meat, mushrooms, and broth.
- Vegetable meals — corn, potatoes, tomatoes.
The 1.0.5 patch added meal buffs: meat gives carry weight and melee damage, fish gives natural regeneration, soup gives health and warmth, spicy food gives movement speed, and egg dishes restore stamina. A home-grown meal with a buff is better than three cans of cola.
The food guide→ covers the full cooking chain and the buff durations.
Where to put the farm
Three locations work:
- Roof farm — safe from ground enemies, gets sun, needs a stable roof and a water supply.
- Walled courtyard — sun and space, but enemies can reach it if the wall breaks.
- Indoor grow room — controlled, needs light, good for mushrooms and herbs.
A roof farm is the best default. It is out of reach of common infected, it gets full sun, and it keeps the ground floor for workshops and storage. Build a railing so you do not fall off while watering.
Farming and defense
A farm is a liability in a siege. Crops burn, pots break, and a Breaker that reaches the roof destroys a season of food. Put the farm behind the main wall, not on the outer edge, and keep a second small plot indoors as a backup.
The base defense guide→ covers the layered layout.
Co-op farming
The host's pots are the only ones that persist. Guests can plant and harvest, but the crop lives in the host's save. Split the work: one player waters, one cooks, one hauls. A four-player group can run a 4×4 roof farm and still have room for a water barrel.
Do not let every player plant a different crop in the same pot. The pot holds one crop; planting over a growing crop wastes the seed.
Common mistakes
- Planting in the dark. Most crops need light; mushrooms are the exception.
- Forgetting to water. Rain helps outdoors, but a dry pot stalls.
- Harvesting early. A immature crop returns little or nothing.
- Farming before a water source. A farm without water is decoration.
- Putting the farm outside the wall. It will be eaten.
FAQ
How many crops are in ZED ZONE?
Twelve. Corn, potato, tomato, wheat, mushroom, and blueberry are the staples; peppers, lavender, sunflowers, and other varieties fill out the list.
Do I need a greenhouse?
No. A roof farm or a walled courtyard works. Mushrooms need a dark, damp room.
Does rain water the crops?
Yes, outdoor pots are watered by rain. Indoor pots need manual watering.
Can I farm in co-op?
Yes, but the host's save owns the pots. Guests can plant and harvest.
