ZED ZONE Guide: 1.0 Start Here

A practical ZED ZONE 1.0 guide: what changed, which route to take first, and the systems that decide whether your run survives week one.

Last Updated: 2026-11-08

ZED ZONE left Early Access on November 5, 2026, and the 1.0 build is not just the old island with a new number. There is a second island, eight-player co-op, farming, two challenge modes, radiation, and a proper ending behind Area 61. The fastest way to ruin a run is to play 1.0 like the 2023 build: hoard rifle ammo, ignore cooking, and treat the boat as the finish line.

This page is the routing table. It tells you which system to learn first, which guide answers the next question, and which mistakes cost the most time.

The first hour is a gear check

Loot the crash site, craft bandages, and find a water source before you follow the road into town. A full stomach and a clean bandage save more runs than a pistol.

What 1.0 actually added

The launch build bundles the three years of Early Access changes into one package. The parts that alter a normal run are:

  • Far Island. Repair the boat on the main island, sail east, and keep both islands open. Items stored in the boat cabin travel with you.
  • Ten new areas. Port, RNA Lab, shopping mall, armory, automated factory, nuclear plant, old airport, military camp, and the connecting railway.
  • Area Guardians. The port, lab, and factory each hold a boss that drops one access device. Three devices open Area 61.
  • Radiation storms. The nuclear plant surrounds itself with a dose meter, radiation sickness, and a separate gear check.
  • Co-op. Up to eight players in a hosted world, with six-character room codes, Steam invites, LAN, and relay fallback.
  • Farming. Twelve crops, planting pots, rain watering, and cooked meals with real buffs.
  • Cataclysm and Horde. Two score-based modes unlocked after you understand Standard.
  • Voxel building. Wood, stone, metal, glass, and hay blocks, multi-storey shells, and furniture on upper floors.
  • New rides. Bicycle, kart, two-seat kart, electric forklift, and a self-driving test car.

The 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 patches then fixed co-op room filters and progress rollback, added meal buffs, and changed the final boss loot. If a video from launch week contradicts the current build, trust the patch notes.

Pick your route

If you have never played

Start with the ZED ZONE beginner guide→. It covers the first week: water, food, a safe sleep spot, a starting weapon, and the first three skill purchases. Read how to play ZED ZONE→ only for the controls and mode select; do not read the endgame pages yet.

Your first base does not need walls. It needs a bed, a fire, a water source, and a door you can close. Build the impressive compound after you have a rifle and a vehicle.

If you are returning from Early Access

Your old knowledge is half right. Melee, noise, ammo scarcity, and the save-on-death rule still matter. The old boat ending is gone: the escape vessel now takes you to Far Island, not to the credits. Workbenches are split into specialized stations, characters and worlds save separately, and the skill tree is larger.

Read the Far Island route→ first, then the boss order→. Your old rifle is still useful; your old base location may not be, because the main island roads and buildings were rebuilt.

If you are playing co-op

The host's world is the save. Guests bring their own character, backpack, gear, and skills. That means a friend can join a fresh world with a late-game character and flatten the difficulty, or join with nothing and struggle. Decide which experience you want before you send the room code. The multiplayer guide→ covers hosting, relay fallback, friendly fire, and the current room-code display bug.

If you want the ending

You need three things: a repaired boat, three Area Guardians dead, and radiation protection good enough to cross the nuclear plant. The Area 61 ending walkthrough→ is the route; the radiation guide→ is the gear check that stops most first attempts.

The first hour, in order

  1. Read the tutorial prompts. The 1.0 build added a proper tutorial around the spawn point. It teaches the interaction wheel, the PDA, and the first craft.
  2. Loot the crash site, then move. Helicopter wreckage gives starting materials, but it also attracts infected. Take the battery, cloth, food, and any container you can open.
  3. Find a water bottle. Empty bottles and cans are more valuable than most guns in hour one. Fill them from rain barrels or sinks, then boil the water at a fire.
  4. Make a melee weapon. A stone axe or crowbar costs almost nothing and does not spend ammo. The weapons list→ shows the early options and their real damage values.
  5. Sleep once. A bedroll or a cleared house gives you a save point. In Standard mode, death sends you back to the last save, so sleeping is progress.
  6. Spend your first vials deliberately. Do not spread points across all three trees. Pick one damage path and one survival path. The skills guide→ explains how vials are made.

Five systems that decide the run

Noise is a resource

Every gunshot pulls a radius of infected. A suppressor does not make a rifle silent; it makes the radius smaller. Bows and crossbows stay quiet, which is why they remain useful long after you find a rifle. If you are looting a hospital or a military checkpoint, clear with melee and a bow, then use firearms only when the pack is already committed.

Ammo is a budget

The item list carries more than a dozen calibres, and none of them are interchangeable. A gun without ammo is a club with extra steps. Before you commit to a calibre, check what the nearest ammo press can produce and how much of that brass you can find. The best weapons guide→ ranks guns by ammo economy, not by the damage number alone.

Water and food are separate meters

Thirst drains faster than hunger. Rain barrels, wells, and cooking pots solve water; fishing, farms, and canned food solve hunger. Raw meat and contaminated water carry a real cost. The food guide→ lists the meal buffs added in 1.0.5, including the Fresh bonus and the cold-food penalty.

Weight is a combat stat

Heavy armour and a full backpack slow you down. The exoskeleton changes that trade: when powered, it carries its own weight and adds armour capacity. If you are fat-rolling away from a Breaker, check your pack before you blame the dodge timing. The backpack guide→ explains the size tiers.

The save model is not forgiving

Standard mode returns you to the last save on death. Cataclysm respawns you where you fell but scores you on consecutive days. Co-op uses the host's world save and each player's character save. Back up the save folder before a big fight; the save location guide→ gives the exact path.

The site is organised as five clusters. Start Here covers controls, saves, console commands, and the beginner route. Weapons & Gear covers the catalogue, mods, packs, and the tier list. Base & Survival covers building, defense, crafting, farming, food, skills, and vehicles. Bestiary & Endgame covers enemies, Far Island, bosses, radiation, and Area 61.

If you only have twenty minutes before playing, read the beginner guide and the controls section of the how-to-play page. If you are already past the first island, read Far Island and the boss order. If you are hosting friends tonight, read multiplayer first and send them the room code after you set the mode filter.

FAQ

Is ZED ZONE 1.0 a new game?

It is the full release of the same game, not a sequel. The map, co-op, farming, modes, and ending are additions to the existing survival loop. Owners of the Early Access build received the 1.0 update.

Do I need to finish the old island before Far Island?

You need a repaired boat, which means gathering the boat materials on the main island. You do not need to clear every location. Once the boat works, you can travel back and forth at any time.

Can I keep playing after the ending?

Yes. The submarine escape triggers the ending, and the save remains playable afterward. You can return to both islands and continue looting, building, or hunting the remaining bosses.

Does co-op change the story?

No. The host's world tracks progression. Guests keep their character and gear, but the access devices, guardians, and Area 61 state belong to the host's save.
