ZED ZONE Tier List: Guns, Melee and Packs
A ZED ZONE tier list for 1.0: guns, melee weapons, and backpacks ranked by role, ammo economy, noise, and how early you can actually get them.
Tier lists are arguments, not facts. This one ranks gear by role value in a normal run: how much it solves, how early you can get it, and how badly it punishes you when the ammo runs dry. A weapon that is S-tier in a boss arena can be C-tier on a stealth run.
The stats below come from the community weapon table and the workbench. Numbers can change between patches; the roles are more stable than the decimals.

Co-op changes the ranking: a slow reload is covered by a teammate, and a loud shotgun matters less when four people are already shooting.
How the tiers work
- S — defines a role; worth building around; strong at its job with no fatal flaw.
- A — excellent at the job, with a real cost (ammo, noise, weight, rarity).
- B — usable and common; a bridge weapon, not an endgame plan.
- C — situational or outclassed; keep it as a backup, not a main.
- D — a trap for new players; the cost outweighs the benefit.
Guns
| Tier | Weapon | Role | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Ruger 10/22 | Quiet rifle | 81 damage, noise 24, .22LR is everywhere |
| S | AR-15 | General rifle | 90 damage, 800 RPM, 30 rounds, easy to control |
| S | Remington 870 | Close defense | 282 damage, the Breaker answer |
| S | VSS | Suppressed auto | 102 damage, noise 15, 30 rounds |
| A | AK-47 | Hard-hitting rifle | 108 damage, cheap 7.62, loud |
| A | Winchester 70 | Precision | 297 damage, 5 rounds, hunting and specials |
| A | MP5-K | Early SMG | 72 damage, 800 RPM, 30 rounds |
| A | Compound bow | Silent hunting | 248 damage, noise 4, recoverable arrows |
| B | Glock 19 | Sidearm | 90 damage, 17 rounds, common 9mm |
| B | M249 | Horde belt | 200 rounds, 1154 RPM, heavy and hungry |
| B | RPK | Base defense | 148 damage, 75 rounds, loud |
| B | Double-barrel shotgun | Panic | 360 damage, two shells, slow reload |
| C | Railgun | Armor tool | 380 damage, limited metal disc ammo |
| C | Laser / tesla gun | Trophy | 600 / 400 damage, rare energy ammo |
| D | Handmade single-shot guns | Desperation | Long reload, one round, poor accuracy |
The 10/22 and the AR-15 are S-tier for different reasons: the 10/22 because it lets you play quietly on a budget, the AR-15 because it does everything else well. The VSS is S-tier only if you can feed it; a suppressed rifle with no ammo is a club.
The GM6 Lynx (1020 damage) sits in A rather than S. It is the best anti-material rifle in the game, but .50 BMG is rare, the weapon is heavy, and firing it indoors is a mistake. It is a boss tool, not a general-purpose S-tier pick.
Melee
| Tier | Weapon | Damage | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Katana Ji | 198 | Highest katana damage, good speed and reach |
| S | Fire axe | 88 | Weapon and tool; repairs; breaks doors |
| A | Katana Red | 128 | Strong all-round blade |
| A | Mace bat | 118 | Blunt damage and stagger |
| A | Iron machete | 85 | Fast, repairable, good vs flesh |
| B | Baseball bat | 64 | Common, decent reach |
| B | Metal spear | 98 | Reach, low durability cost |
| B | Crowbar | 40 | Fast, repairable, opens crates |
| C | Golf club | 148 | High damage, slow and fragile |
| C | Pan | 50 | Meme value, poor durability |
| D | Wooden spear | 68 | Low damage, breaks quickly |
Melee is not a fallback in ZED ZONE; it is the default for quiet clearing. A katana or a fire axe saves ammo, and the fire axe also chops wood and breaks doors. The mace bat is the best blunt weapon for players who cannot aim a blade.
Spears are a trap for new players. Their reach is real, but the damage is low and the durability cost is high. The metal spear is usable; the wooden spear is a stopgap.
Backpacks
| Tier | Pack | Why |
|---|---|---|
| S | Big outdoor backpack | Largest practical capacity for hauling |
| A | Oversized outdoor backpack | Good capacity, easier to find |
| A | Hiking backpack | Best early balance of size and weight |
| B | Trekking backpack | Common starter |
| B | School backpack | Small but light |
| C | Cloth / leather bag | Tiny; replace quickly |
Backpack capacity is a logistics stat. A bigger pack lets you carry a second weapon, more ammo, and building materials, but it also tempts you to over-loot. The backpack guide→ has the full size comparison.
Attachments that change tiers
A B-tier gun with the right attachments can outperform an A-tier gun with none:
- Suppressor — lowers noise, which is the most valuable stat in the game. A suppressed MP5-K is a different weapon.
- Extended magazine — turns a 10-round rifle into a 30-round rifle; the difference between a reload and a death.
- Sight — a red dot or 2x makes headshots practical; a 6x or 8x is for hunting, not house clearing.
- Stock — reduces recoil and improves follow-up shots.
The weapon mods guide→ explains the four slots: barrel, sight, stock, and shell collector.
Weapons that are better than their tier
Some gear is misranked by raw stats:
- The compound bow is A-tier in solo play because it is silent and its ammo is recoverable. In co-op, someone else's rifle will pull the block anyway.
- The double-barrel shotgun is B-tier on paper but S-tier as a backup: two shells solve a sudden Breaker, and you can reload behind a door.
- The MP5-K is A-tier early and B-tier late; it is the best cheap SMG, not the best SMG.
- The GM6 Lynx is A-tier for bosses and D-tier for everything else. Do not carry it as your only rifle.
Tier list by mode
Standard solo: 10/22, AR-15, compound bow, fire axe, big outdoor backpack. Quiet, self-sufficient, ammo-efficient.
Co-op: AR-15 or AK-47, Remington 870, VSS, mace bat, oversized pack. Someone else can carry the repair kits.
Horde: M249 or RPK, Remington 870, laser or tesla if you have one, katana, big pack. Noise does not matter when the horde is already coming.
Cataclysm: VSS, compound crossbow, fire axe, light pack. You cannot afford to pull every block when death resets the streak.
FAQ
What is the best gun in ZED ZONE?
The AR-15 is the best general rifle. The VSS is the best suppressed rifle. The Remington 870 is the best close-range weapon. The GM6 Lynx is the best anti-material rifle.
Is the katana the best melee weapon?
The Katana Ji has the highest listed damage among katanas at 198. The fire axe is more useful overall because it is also a tool.
Are backpacks worth upgrading?
Yes. Capacity is a logistics upgrade, and the biggest packs let you carry a second weapon and enough materials for a base.
Why is the railgun only C-tier?
Its ammo is limited and its role is narrow. It is excellent against armour and mediocre against a crowd.
