ZED ZONE Food: Cooking and Buffs

ZED ZONE food and cooking: clean water, the campfire and hob, meal buffs, preservation, food poisoning, and the best meals before a boss.

Last Updated: 2026-11-08

Food in ZED ZONE is not just a hunger bar. The 1.0.5 patch made meals a buff system: meat gives carry weight and melee damage, fish gives natural regeneration, soup gives health and warmth, spicy food gives movement speed, and egg dishes restore stamina. A cooked meal is a temporary build, and the right meal before a boss is worth more than a spare magazine.

This guide covers water, cooking, the buff table, and preservation.

Fresh food is a buff

Cooked meals give timed bonuses; cold leftovers last two-thirds as long. Eat the fresh meal before a boss and save the cold one for travel.

Water first

You can survive a day without food; water is the immediate problem. The rules:

  • Rainwater — collect it in barrels or bottles. It still needs boiling.
  • Surface water — ponds, rivers, sinks. Contaminated.
  • Wells — some are clean, some are not. Test before you drink.
  • Boiled water — a campfire or cooking hob plus a container makes it safe.

Drinking untreated water can cause sickness, which drains stamina and health. A cooking hob on a campfire is the reliable fix; a pot of water on the fire works too. Do not wait until the thirst bar is red; carry two bottles and refill at every source.

The cooking stations

A campfire alone can roast meat. A cooking hob on top of the fire unlocks the full recipe list: soups, bread, fries, ketchup, and the meals that give buffs.

The cooking menu shows the ingredients you have and the ones you are missing. If a recipe is greyed out, check the missing item; it is usually water, a vegetable, or a cooking oil.

Do not cook on a fire inside a wooden room without ventilation. The 1.0.5 indoor rule keeps rain out, but it does not make a fire safe. Use a stone floor or a dedicated kitchen.

The buff table

The 1.0.5 notes list these categories:

Food type Buff Best use
Meat Carry weight and melee damage Loot runs, base building
Fish Natural health regeneration Exploration, long fights
Soup Health and warmth Cold weather, Far Island
Spicy food Movement speed Running, escaping
Egg dishes Stamina recovery Boss fights, hordes

Freshly cooked meals have a prefix and last longer. A cold meal keeps two-thirds of its buff duration, so eat before you travel, not after.

The buffs stack with gear and skills, but they do not stack with themselves. Eating two meat meals does not double the carry weight; it refreshes the timer.

Food values and preservation

The food list includes cola, cranberries, blueberries, prunelia, meat, rotten meat, Fenda, Sprite, radiant fruit, sugar, SPAM, canned fruit, lager, homemade meat and fruit cans, gingerbread, coconut, dried meat, fried meat, salmon, crucian carp, carp, tuna, and mahi-mahi.

Preservation matters more than variety:

  • Canned food — shelf-stable, no fridge.
  • Dried meat — lightweight, long-lasting.
  • Smoked or cooked meat — lasts longer than raw.
  • Fridge — powered storage; keeps fresh food edible.
  • Canning machine — turns meals into cans for expeditions.

A raw steak in a backpack is a timer. Cook it, dry it, or can it before you leave base.

Food poisoning and rotten meat

Rotten meat is not a cheap meal. Eating it can cause food poisoning, which drains health and stamina and can kill you at the worst moment. The same applies to questionable water and uncooked fish.

If you are poisoned:

  • Drink clean water.
  • Eat a light meal, not a heavy one.
  • Use antitoxic potion or a medical item if you have one.
  • Rest in a safe room; do not push into a boss fight while poisoned.

The radiation guide→ covers the other environmental status effect; the two can stack and make a bad situation worse.

The best meals by situation

  • Before a boss: egg dish for stamina, meat for melee damage if you use a blade, soup for health and warmth.
  • Before a loot run: meat for carry weight, fish for regeneration.
  • Before a long drive: spicy food for movement speed, plus a can of food for the road.
  • Before a horde night: egg dish and soup; you will be standing still and taking hits.
  • In cold weather: soup and warm clothing. Far Island's port is wet and the radiation zone is worse.

Cooking for a co-op group

The host's kitchen is the only one that persists. Cook in batches: one player gathers ingredients, one cooks, one carries the meals. A four-player group can run a soup pot, a meat grill, and a canning machine at the same time.

Do not let every player cook their own meal in the same pot. The pot holds one recipe; starting a second one cancels the first.

What to carry

A practical food kit:

  • Two cooked meals — one meat, one fish or soup.
  • One canned or dried backup — for the trip home.
  • Two water bottles — one clean, one empty for refilling.
  • A cooking pot or hob — if the trip is long enough to need hot food.
  • Antitoxic potion — insurance against bad water.

Leave the raw ingredients at base. They are heavy and they spoil.

FAQ

Do meals give buffs?

Yes. Meat, fish, soup, spicy food, and egg dishes each give a different buff, and freshly cooked meals last longer.

How do I get clean water?

Boil contaminated water at a campfire or cooking hob. Rainwater also needs boiling.

Does cooked food spoil?

Yes, but slower than raw. A fridge or canning machine extends it further.

What should I eat before a boss?

An egg dish for stamina, soup for health and warmth, and meat if you are using melee. Avoid spicy food unless you need to run.
